Welcome from the Committee...

The Auckland branch of the Aotearoa Careers and Transition Education Association are proud to be hosting the Annual National CATE Conference in Auckland from 24-26 November 2010.

The conference will open with registrations and a Powhiri at 10am on Wednesday 24 November and finish with a conference dinner extravaganza on Friday 26 November.

The theme for the conference is "Navigate".

Charting the Course - Career theory, practice and education

Sustainable career education and guidance is underpinned by planning at strategic, policy and programme levels. This theme will explore:

  • the latest research in the area of career development,
  • the creation of successful pathways
  • new thinking in assisting clients to make informed career decisions.

Know the Ropes - Innovative career development practice and tools

The aim of these sessions is for participants to gain practical tools and resources to assist clients and students to develop meaningful career management skills. These will be presented as practical interactive workshops and will include such topics as:

  • counselling skills
  • understanding career management competencies
  • skills to work effectively in a multicultural environment
  • opportunities to share professional experiences

All Aboard - Integrating career education across the curriculum

As careers is now such an integral part of the new curriculum, it is important for subject teachers and senior management in schools to have the knowledge and tools to be able to include career education in their day-to-day classroom activities. These sessions will be of particular interest to subject teachers in your school (see School Pass Registration). You will be hearing from industry and education professionals, who will be sharing their expertise on:

  • the links between the curriculum areas and relevant careers
  • learning outcomes that address the career management competencies young people need to develop

Land Ahoy - Emerging trends, opportunities and innovation

This theme will help to develop an understanding of the relationship between work, society and the economy. Workshops will cover such topics as:

  • national and global labour market trends and demographic trends
  • advances in technologies that create more effective ways of working
  • assessing relevant recent and upcoming changes in education policy

Anchoring in a Safe Harbour - Providing first-class service for career practitioners

We use many skills to run a successful career development practice, including the ability to look after ourselves and stay motivated in our roles. These sessions will provide participants with:

  • management and leadership skills
  • motivation for our own roles as career practitioners
  • understanding of the importance of supervision
  • personal wellness
  • support for new practitioners

The Navigate 2010 conference committee is delighted to announce that in conjunction with the New Zealand Defence Force, our conference dinner on Friday 26 November will be hosted on the HMNZS Canterbury. We are very grateful to the Navy, the Air Force and the Army for this very unique opportunity. The HMNZS Canterbury will be situated at Princes Wharf for an exceptional night of exciting entertainment and exquisite food. Do not miss this once in a lifetime opportunity!

We would be delighted if you could come on board in Auckland November 2010.
